Daria – Trouble in Lawndale
“Girls, I just want you to know your mother and I realize it's not easy moving to a whole new town -- especially for you, Daria, right?” Jake Morgendorffer said, as he and his daughters approached Lawndale High.

“Did we move?” Daria asked, as she looked around, annoyed that her father had spoken after remaining silent since they left their new home half an hour before.

“Stop following me, Daria!” her sister, Quinn, said.

“Excuse me, we’re walking along to the same school!”

“You don’t have be right behind!” Quinn said.

“It’s not my fault Lawndale has such narrow sidewalks.”

Jake, annoyed with his daughters’ arguing, put his headphones back on. “I've been working on the railroad... come on, guys, we know this one.”

Meanwhile at Lawndale High, two students were already there. (Although calling one of them a student might have been stretching the definition a bit…) “Come on, Mack Daddy! I'll get the coach to write us a note. I'll say we need extra time on the free weights.”

“I told you not to call me that!” Mack said, exasperated. “And they're not going to excuse you from English for weight training.”

“I can't take any more of this Shakespeare dude, bro. He's, like, a total chick writer!”

Mack sighed.

“Maybe we could go to that Mall of the Millennium this weekend, Daddy?” Quinn asked as they approached the school.

“A hundred miles? To go to a Mall? There’s a Mall less than five minutes from home. In a car!”

“I’m sure there are some fascinating Malls in Southeast Asia.” Daria snarked.

“Southeast Asia! To go to a mall!” Jake exclaimed.

“She’s joking!” Quinn said.

“Oh!”

Jane Lane arrived at Lawndale High. She switched off the audio recording of the last night’s Sick Sad World episode. The concept of a model creating an encyclopedia was appropriately inane. “Drawing pictures in margins…” she mused. That was something she did often.

Having been enrolled at the School, Daria found that she had Science for first period. In class she quickly found that the teacher had issues… “…and like a husband going home to his noble and self-sacrificing wife, the rat keeps returning to the food box. That is, the positive reinforcement. Huh, if only men could be more like rats. Oh, sure, they come home at first. You feed them, you wait on them, and then, after twenty-two thankless years, they just up and leave. No note, no phone call, no nothing!” She slammed her ruler on her desk for emphasis. “Just... like... that!”

“I wonder why he left,” Daria murmured to her new acquaintance, Jodie Landon.

“Now, before I divide the class into teams of two, who can give me another example of reinforcement?”

The class didn’t give an answer.

“Fine, class. Ignore me... just like he did!”

“Just as well he wasn’t Jones,” Daria commented.

“I heard that!” Barch said. “But we’re not talking about cults. You can ask DeMartino about that! But you have stumbled upon an interesting answer. A charismatic man re-enforcing herd-like behaviour in his followers, leading to tragic results!”

“Excellent example Daria,” Jodie said.

Daria shrugged.

Between classes, Sandi Griffin was talking with Joey Green, Jamie White and Jeffy Brown, ‘So I said, "Sure, it's a nice car. Do you have enough gas to get to Loserville?’”

“That’s funny, Sandi,” Joey said.

“You really know how to tell a story,” Jeffy said.

“Thanks,” Sandi said.

“Tell us the part with Stacy again,” Jamie said.

“Stacy wasn’t in that story. It was just Tiffany and I,” Sandi said.

“Well then, take Tiffany out and put Stacy in,” Joey suggested.

Stacy then came along. “Hi guys!” she said. “Sandi, Joey, Jeffy, Jerome.”

“Hi, Stacy,” Joey said.

“Hi, Stacy,” Jeffy added.

“Hi, Stacy. It’s Jamie!”

“Oh, sorry!”

“Have you seen that new girl?” Jamie asked.

“The redhead?” Stacy asked.

“She could be new member for the Fashion Club,” Sandi answered.

“There she is!” Jamie said.

Sandi sighed as Jamie and Jeffy ran off.

Daria listened as Jodie told her how busy she was. “…And that is why I can only go to study sessions in the early evenings,” Jodie said.

“I bet you don’t have to deal with Family Court,” Daria said.

“Family Court?” Jodie asked incredulously.

“It was an attempt by my Mom to use Jurisprudence in family matters after my sister and I came home late one night.”

“That sounds crazy,” Jodie commented.

“It was,” Daria said. “But it didn’t last long, because they were too busy to enforce a month-long grounding.”

“That’s something I’d like to hear about at some point,” Jodie said as they came to the next class.

“Can monkeys surf the net, and corrupt our kids? Chimpanzee chat rooms, next on Sick Sad World.”

Claire Defoe switched off the TV after students started filing into the classroom. She saw the new student, Daria. “Ms. Morgendorffer!”

Daria came over. “Yes?”

“Your records from Highland are intriguing,” the teacher said.

“I experimented, that’s all.”

“Using a glue gun as an actual gun?” Claire asked with an eyebrow raised.

Daria raised her own eyebrows. “Oh, that. Those two deserved it, but I won’t do it here in Lawndale.”

“Good. I just wanted to hear it from you personally. I would like to talk about your previous art after class. There’s a student I’d like you to meet.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Fifty dollars an hour!” Jane groused as she approached the art classroom. That was the amount Mr. Ewing had quoted for the average Math tutoring cost in Lawndale. She doubted it would be any cheaper in Oakwood. ‘Or Middlebury for that matter,’ she mused as she overheard other students complaining about exorbitant prices.
“Don't worry, Miss Morgendorffer. No other faculty members are coming.” He looked at Jane. “Other than Defoe of course. She'll be here shortly.”

“Hey, We're Mystik Spiral. But we might change our name. Welcome to my sister Janie's Sweet Sixteen Party.”

Mystik Spiral then launched into one of their older songs, confusing their audience. “Huh?” Angie asked.

“What song is this?” Brittany asked.

“I'm not sure,” Angie answered.

DeMartino followed Jane and Daria out into the yard. “I see that they haven't improved much,” he commented.

“Huh?” Daria asked.

“They sound almost exactly the way they did at school,” DeMartino answered.

“That's not surprising,” Daria commented. “Given Trent's proclivity for sleep.”

DeMartino chuckled at that.

Claire Defoe knocked on the door. Jane answered it.

Troubles of Invitation
Brittany Taylor was having difficulty in Art. She liked drawing in art, but she always had difficulty drawing three dimensional pictures. She sighed and tried to draw a cube again. She did it again! It was all wonky! “Ms. Defoe!”

The teacher came over. “Having trouble?” she asked.

“Yes! I can’t seem to get the cube right!”

Defoe looked at Brittany’s work so far. “Have you heard of single point perspective?”

“Um… Maybe?” Brittany responded.

The teacher sighed. “Try to imagine a point somewhere.”

“Um, sure,” Brittany said. She chose a spot above the paper.

“Now use that as a point to draw the edges of the cube towards.”

“OK,” Brittany said.

“I’ll come back later and see how you do.”

It took Brittany most of the class time to figure it out. Defoe returned and saw her work. “You did well!”

“Thanks.”

After class... )
“What’s happening, Amiga?” Jane asked.

“The Doctor, again,” Daria answered.

That was all Jane needed to know. “Gotcha.”

Daria then filled her in on what was happening, including the portal to Middleton.

“I see,” Jane said when Daria had finished.

“We need to look out for unusual activity.”

“Of course.”

Quinn met her friends. “Quinn!” Stacy Rowe called out.

“Hi, Stacy,” Quinn said warmly.

“You were with that guy again, weren’t you?” Sandi Griffin asked in an icy tone.

“Sandi!” Quinn cried out. “Not right here…”

“And why not?” Sandi asked.

“I don’t want the whole school to know!” Quinn retorted.

“I guess not,” Sandi said.

It wasn’t long before someone came over. “Hi, Daria, is it?”

“Yes, and you are?”

“Scarlett,” the girl answered. “I liked your answer to DeMartino.”

Daria smirked. “You’re not the only one.”

“I overheard you and Jodie earlier,” Scarlett admitted.

“I see,” Daria said.

“You were a little loud.”

“Oh?”

“Especially when you groused about the teachers,” Scarlett responded.

“I’m wondering what I’ve got myself into.”

“There are some teachers who don’t have issues.”

Daria took out her timetable. “I have art next.”

“Defoe is normal.”

“Good!”

Scarlett and Daria finished their lunch. )

“Lawndale Sun Herald?” Aialah asked as she looked at the newspaper. She supposed that was the name of the town. Lawndale. ‘Sounds very suburban,’ she thought.

“Name of settlement confirmed,” the computer reported. “Lawndale.”

“Aialah to Baffin. It’s called Lawndale.”

“Acknowledged,” Alpha said. “Investigate further. Find a library and research the history of the area.”

“Understood. Aialah out.”

“Computer, access the internet. Download information on Lawndale and it’s neighbouring region,” Alpha ordered.

“Affirmative.”

Daria sighed.

Having endured Ms. Barch’s misandry Daria went to lunch. She entered the cafeteria and saw the cliques various people were in. ‘Where to sit?’ she wondered. She looked around. She saw Brittany sitting with other cheerleaders and Jodie sitting with an African American guy. ‘Looks like they’re a couple,’ she thought. She decided to sit by herself.

“Yes, Daria,” Ms. Defoe said. “This is Jane Lane.”

“Hi,” Daria said.

“Jane Lane. Ms. Defoe says that you’re into alternative art.”

“I suppose,” Daria allowed. “Are you to?”

“I have some of my art here,” Jane said. “Ms. Defoe?”

“The storeroom is open, Jane,” Defoe said.

Daria entered the storeroom after Jane. She could see many paintings with a similar style. All of them alternative.

“You’ve picked an interesting time to start here,” Jane said, interrupting her examination of one of the paintings.

“Oh?” Daria asked.

Part 6
Jane got to her homeroom in time. “A Little tardy Lane!” Miss Morris grouched.

“Just had to attend to some Mystery Club business,” Jane explained.

“That’s no excuse!”

“Not to you, no.”

“Jane Lane. Late!”

Jane grumbled. She knew Miss Morris had it in for her family. She was certain that was one reason why Penny had gone off grid. She handed Miss Morris one of the photocopies she was carrying.

“What’s this?”

“A Sketch of someone Daria thinks may be one of the people who broke into the coffee house,” Jane answered.

Miss Morris responded by screwing up the sketch. “Mystery Club! Sounds like Teens getting themselves in over their heads to me! Detention, this afternoon, Lane!”

Jane slumped to her desk.

Daria was almost late to her homeroom, again. Ms. Defoe marked her off with a slight smirk.

“Would you like one of the sketches?”

“Certainly.”

Daria sat and found herself approached by another student. One with her face partially hidden by her long blonde hair. “You’re looking for whoever broke into the Cybercafe?” she asked.

“Yes,” Daria answered. “And you are?”

“Jen. Jen Burns.”

“And you want to help me with this case?”

“Yes. I’ve also thought of joining the Mystery Club.”

“That would be good,” Daria considered. She gave Jen one of the sketches. “Have you seen that individual?”

Jen scrutinised the sketch. “I’m not sure. I’ll see if my friends have.”

Rumours spread through the school as the students went to class. Some were finding similarities in the sketches to some unpopular students, despite attempts by Daria, Jane, Quinn and Charles to stop them jumping to such conclusions.

However, one of those who actually did break in became aware that Daria was onto them. He had to warn the others!

Daria and Jane caught up between first and second period. Daria listened patiently to Jane’s diatribe about Miss Morris. “So, she won’t help us?” she added.

“Definitely not,” Jane concluded.

“But there is Ms. Defoe.”

“That’s true, but she’s supportive anyway.”

‘There’s a story there…’ Daria thought. But that would be followed up on later.

“I’m sorry, but our few minutes are up.”
Daria in the Background – Part 2
Lawndale High School; October 1, 10:23 AM
Art Class was interesting. Daria knew she didn’t have any real talent in the subject. She knew that her strengths lay elsewhere. However, even she could do basic things like perspective. “Perspective is hard,” came a high-pitched voice to her left.

Daria sighed. She saw the Art teacher approaching.

“Good work, Daria. Your cube is bursting out of the picture plane. You’ve really created the illusion of depth,” Ms. Defoe said.

“Thanks,” Daria murmured.

“Ms. Defoe?” came the high-pitched voice again. “I need a new pencil. I used up the eraser.”

“Here, Brittany, take another pencil and a fresh piece of paper, and try again,” the exasperated teacher said.

“If I don’t figure this perspective thing out, I’ll have to take remedial art.”

“It’ll probably be a good thing,” Daria considered out loud.

Brittany shook her head. “I don’t think so. Hey, you’re smart. Show me how to do this?”

“Isn’t there someone else you can ask?” Daria asked in an annoyed tone.

“Umm, No!”

Daria quickly showed Brittany by drawing lines converging at a point and using the example of Cashman’s having a sale. Brittany got it but she was still confused. “Is Cashman’s really having a one day sale?”

“I don’t know,” Daria answered.

Mysteries of Lawndale – Night of the Coffee House Part 5
“You’re here just in time,” Helen said to her daughters as they entered the kitchen. “Dinner is ready.”

“You know these things can go into the evenings,” Daria said.

“But not often. You can’t solve every crime you come across, Daria.” Her older daughter may have been a successful detective in Highland, but she there were times when she did fail.

“Of course not!” Daria said with slight annoyance as she sat at the table. “But I was getting somewhere… I just need to think about it more.”

“How was your day, Quinn?” Helen asked.

“It was great. The Anime Club meeting was good, and I was able to join the relay team.”

“That’s great!” Jake said.

“That’s good, Quinn.”

After dinner, Quinn began to read Lawndale in the Post War Years 1945 – 1985.

Thursday, October 16th, 1997
Daria arrived at the Lane’s house at 7:45. Jane was yawning as she sipped at her coffee. “I don’t think you can do much in half an hour,” she said.

“No, but I will get copies of the sketches to Officer Peterson after school,” Daria responded.

“I doubt Ms. Li would approve of that use of any of the school’s photocopiers.”

“She doesn’t have to know.”

“Of course,” Jane said. She went to get the sketches.

Daria then went to the phone. )
Brittany – Party Time Part 1
“I don’t know why you had to drop me,” Brian complained as Brittany turned the corner to his school.

“Because Ashley-Amber has to go to an audition in Oakwood, and Dad to an auction in Middleton,” Brittany explained.

“I could have got the bus!”

“Do you even know where your bus pass is?” Brittany asked.

“Um…”

“I knew you lost it!”

“I could’ve found it,” Brian objected.

We’re here!” she said as she pulled up in the drop off zone. “Try to behave yourself!”

Brian stuck out his tongue as he got out of the car. Brittany sighed as she drove off.

Brittany and Daria were in art class. )
