“Yes, that’s me,” Brittany admitted. She waited to see what SpiderGirl would do next. Whether she would also reveal her secret identity or not.

“I guess I have no choice,” SpiderGirl said. She then pulled off her mask.

“Quinn?” Brittany asked. If she had thought that either of the Morgendorffer girls to be SpiderGirl, it would have been more likely to be Daria.

“So now you know. I’m SpiderGirl,” Quinn said. She produced a web and swung over Brittany. “See!”

“I see,” Brittany said.

“But why did you decide to become Ninja Talon?”

“It’s a long story. You became SpiderGirl after your father died, right?”

“That’s right.”

“As you know, I was already thinking about fighting crime, that night after the agents visited and DeMartino was arrested,” Brittany said as she started into her story.

Flashback – The Lawndale Files
It was our conversation after the rest of the group went home that made me decide that I would help you fight the increasing crime in Lawndale.

Brittany watched as SpiderGirl headed back in the direction they had come from Howard Drive, where the Lane’s lived. As she walked home through Crewe Neck she thought more on what she had asked the superheroine about. ‘What is it like being a hero, fighting crime?’ she had asked.

And the response; “Difficult. But the thanks I get from the people rescued from muggers make it more than worth it.”

That someone had died wasn’t good. Brittany looked around. She was sure she was alone. She then jogged home.

“Brittany? You’re home early,” Ashley-Amber Taylor noted as her stepdaughter entered the lounge room.

“I need to ask you something,” Britttany responded in a serious tone.

“What is it?”

“You know martial arts, right?”

“Yes,” Ashley-Amber answered. “But what brought this on.”

“Nothing in particular.”

“You just want to improve, is that it?”

“Yes,” Brittany answered.

“I’m sure there are Dojos in Lawndale.”

“If not, I could go to the one I went to before in Oakwood, or one in Middlebury.”

“Of course,” Ashley-Amber said. “They’re not too far away.”

Quinn saw Mr. DeMartino get annoyed as Ms. Li entered with a new student. “Good Morning students! I have a new student to introduce. Mr. Harry Osborn!”

“Good Morning!” Harry said as he waved to the class.

“I trust that you will not treat him any more differently than any other new student?”

“Of course not, Angela!” DeMartino said.

“I was talking to the students, Anthony!” Li shot back. “I know you won’t treat any students with favoritism, no matter how well connected they are.”

DeMartino grumbled. Quinn was sure that he wanted the interruption over with.

Harry took an empty seat next a girl with brown hair. “You know my name,” he said to her once the Principal had left the room.

“That I do,” the girl responded haughtily.

“And, what’s yours?” Harry pressed.

“Mr. Osborn!” the teacher said. “Introductions can occur after class!”

“Sorry!” Harry said, not entirely sincerely.

“Sandi,” the girl answered quietly after the teacher had turned back to the board.

Quinn had overheard the exchange between Harry Osborn and Sandi. ‘I hope he can handle what he would be getting into,’ she thought. She also hoped that he would be able to keep her company.

Harry found Sandi during lunch. )
“Don't worry, Miss Morgendorffer. No other faculty members are coming.” He looked at Jane. “Other than Defoe of course. She'll be here shortly.”

“Hey, We're Mystik Spiral. But we might change our name. Welcome to my sister Janie's Sweet Sixteen Party.”

Mystik Spiral then launched into one of their older songs, confusing their audience. “Huh?” Angie asked.

“What song is this?” Brittany asked.

“I'm not sure,” Angie answered.

DeMartino followed Jane and Daria out into the yard. “I see that they haven't improved much,” he commented.

“Huh?” Daria asked.

“They sound almost exactly the way they did at school,” DeMartino answered.

“That's not surprising,” Daria commented. “Given Trent's proclivity for sleep.”

DeMartino chuckled at that.

Claire Defoe knocked on the door. Jane answered it.

08 The Three Misfits
It was early evening at Lawndale High. Principal Angela Li was working late. There was a knock at her door. “Come in.”

The Vice Principal, Anthony DeMartino, entered. “Here’s a Preliminary report on the school this term.”

“Very good, Anthony,” Angela said.

“You’ll note that there are three students who are reclusive and not reaching their potential.”

Angela looked at the report. “Only three?” she asked.

“Yes. Despite their recent bereavement, both Morgendorffers are doing well academically.”

“I see that too, although both still don’t have extracurriculars after the dissolution of the Fashion Club.”

“I see you’re thinking,” Anthony said.

“Maybe Quinn could help those three.”

“Not Daria?”

“Daria is still, reticent, about participation in school outside of academics, whereas Quinn wants to continue such participation even after the Fashion Club was disbanded. That was due to something to do with Ms. Griffin.”

Anthony nodded. “Quinn it is then, but how?”

“Let me consider that.”

“Good.”

Helen opened the door. “Hello, Elisabeth. Stacy will be down shortly.”

Elisabeth Rowe entered. “How are you holding up?” she asked.

“I’m fine. Keeping busy, mostly. My sisters are helping, funnily enough.”

“You’re lonely, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” Helen admitted.

“You aren’t alone,” Elisabeth said taking one of Helen’s hands.

“Thanks, but I don’t know you much,” Helen said.

Stacy and Tiffany then came down the stairs. “Mom, Tiffany would like a lift home,” the former said.

“Sure,” Elisabeth said to her daughter. She turned to Helen. “Would you like to come to a café tomorrow evening?”

“I’ll see if I can swing it with work,” Helen answered. ‘It would be a good idea,’ she thought.

“I’ll hold you to it.”

“How’s Quinn?” Elisabeth asked her daughter as she pulled away from the Morgendorffers.

“She’s still grieving, but she’s coping in her own way,” Stacy answered.

“That’s good.”

“You’re concerned for Mrs. Morgendorffer, aren’t you?”

“Yes.”

“Understood, keep alert,” Freeman ordered. She looked to Ma’ah and he nodded.

“Share the data with the Che’Ta, Freeman out.”

“Acknowledged, Cerritos out.”

“Can I come to? I mean if we’re still together?” A blonde cheerleader asked.

“Ahh, Brittany! Can you guess which war we fought against the Mexicans over Manifest Destiny?”

Brittany concentrated. “Um, no!”

“Please try, Brittany!”

Brittany then said something that just made the teacher more aggravated.

Excerpt from: Daria and Change
“Class, we have a new student joining us today. Please welcome Daria Morgendorffer. Daria, raise your hand, please.”

Daria raised her hand.

“Well, Daria. As long as you have your hand raised.” He then chuckled. “I suppose you think it’s unfair to be asked a question on the first day of class.”

“Excuse me?”

“Daria, can you concisely and unemotionally sum up for us the doctrine of Manifest Destiny?

“Manifest Destiny was a slogan popular in the 1840s. It was used by people who claimed it was God's will for the U.S. to expand all the way to the Pacific Ocean. These people did not include many Mexicans,” Daria answered.

“Very good, Daria. Almost... suspiciously good. All right, class. Who can tell me which war Manifest Destiny was used to justify?” He spotted Kevin Thompson, who he hoped would get something right. “Kevin? How about you?”

“The Vietnam War?” the football player guessed.

DeMartino was more annoyed. “That came a little later, Kevin... a hundred years later. A lot of good men died in that conflict, Kevin. I believe we owe it to them to at least get the century right!”

“Uh? Operation Watergate?” Kevin guessed again.

Daria looked at the interaction between the quarterback and the teacher. It was obvious that the former was out of his depth.

“Can I come to?”

“So, what’s this about fundraising?” Donna Bolton asked.

Daria explained what she had told Brittany earlier.

“So, it’s because of your parents?” Andrea asked.

“Yes,” Daria answered.

“That is definitely unfair,” Andrea complained.

‘So, I brought it up with Brittany,” Daria explained.

“And I decided to bring you two in and get Kevvie to do it with Mack,” Brittany explained.

“But wouldn’t Mack want to do it with Jodie?” Donna asked.

“Probably,” Brittany admitted.

“In any case, it would depend on what we’re selling,” Andrea said.

“I agree,” Daria said.

“But we probably won’t know until Mr. O’Neill tells us,” Brittany said.

They talked about it for a while, but all they agreed on was to talk to O’Neill in the morning.

Daria arrived at school early with Donna. She still wasn’t sure about the fundraising. “So, we’re going to the office?” Donna asked.

“Yes,” Daria answered. “We’re meeting Brittany and Andrea there before talking to O’Neill.”

“Of course,” Donna said with a smile.

Andrea entered Jane's room after some hesitation. She saw that there were many art supplies. “But is there a large tub of paint?” She started looking, being careful to put stuff back where she found it.

The area of the yard between the house and the gazebo was starting to get crowded, Daria noted as she noticed Angie lead Robert out of the house. She took a sip from the punch. 'At least it hasn't been spiked yet.' She then decided to go see if more people would come soon.

Charles knew it might be a bad idea but he approached the Fashion Club with his usual grin and a soda.

Quinn saw him coming. “Upchuck at 2 o'clock!”

“Wha-at?” Tiffany asked, oblivious, as Stacy started hyperventilating.

Sandi turned to the approaching menace.

“Hello beautious maidens.”

“Charles! You had best turn away before something happens,” Sandi said.

“Feisty!” Upchuck said, but didn't move.

Sandi glared at him as Quinn put herself in a fighting stance.

“Feisty!” he said before leaving.

“He shouldn't be bothering us!” Sandi declared.

“We can probably do something, that will humilate,” Quinn pondered.

Sandi had an idea. “Something...” she said with a smirk.

Daria opened the door. )
Daria arrived at Lawndale High twenty minutes before homeroom. It was larger than her old school, but then that was a rather small (and exclusive) school. Helen didn’t want her to waste (as she put it) Mother’s money sending her to Feilding, so she was going to the school Quinn was already going to. Many other students were milling around the campus as they arrived. Daria sighed. She wasn’t good in crowds. ‘Best to get it over with.’ She would have liked to check out the library, but she had to check in with the Principal.

Angela Li, Principal of Lawndale High, heard the knock at her office door. “Enter!” she said.

“Daria Barksdale here.”

“Welcome! Come in!”

Once Daria was seated, Ms. Li got down to business. “Your records have arrived from your old school, Ms. Barksdale. Quite impressive academically speaking.”

“I did do some extracurriculars,” Daria said picking up on the principal’s meaning.

“But not very many.”

“Just those I was interested in.”

“I see,” the Principal said.

“And when it comes to this school, the same logic will apply.”

“I think you will find a wide variety of extracurriculars here, Ms. Barksdale. There are over fifty clubs, and sports of all descriptions.”

“I will let the office know later this week. I would like to settle in first,” Daria said.

“Certainly, Ms. Barksdale. I look forward to finding out before next week. But there are other notations on your record.”

Daria knew to what she referred. “And you will note that was because of specific problems at each school.”

“Certainly,” Li said in an authorative tone. “But you did cause additional problems.”

“I saw something wrong, I tried to deal with it.”

“There is nothing wrong here, Ms. Barksdale.”

“I would hope that is the truth, Ms. Li,” Daria said.

“I will be keeping an eye on you. That is what I was saying!” the principal said.

“Understood.”

“You are free to go to class now. Here’s your hall pass.”

Daria recognised a dismissal when she saw one. “Later, Ms. Li.”

“Additional note to self,” Ms. Li said into a tape recorder after Daria had left, “keep additional eyes on Daria Barksdale!”
