28. Alpha and Aialah
Aialah finished going through the log on Arendelle. It was informative, but she was sure that it wasn’t conducive to understanding any magic on the particular Earth they were at. ‘Maybe something else?’

“Done?” Alpha asked.

“Yes.”

“You’re unsure.”

Aialah nodded.

“I couldn’t make much of Elsa’s magic either,” Alpha admitted.

“And Nina?”

“She still hasn’t made it that far.”

“Oh,” Aialah said.

“But maybe you could look at one of the other incidences.”

“Maybe.”

Alpha looked over the Arendelle data again. It still confused her. She compared it with the scans they had taken of New York. There was no match. ‘Of course not.’

She then went back to the command chair and waited for Nina to report in.

It was late in the evening when Nina reported in.
“I still haven’t found Octavius.”

“Understood,” Alpha said.

“I’m going to continue looking out for Spider-Man.”

“Keep me informed. Alpha out.” She then turned to Aialah. “You’ve been on shift for nearly fourteen hours.”

“I have been taking breaks,” Aialah said.

“That’s good, but you need rest. The maximum recommended is twelve hours.”

“Then I’ll be back after I sleep.”

“Your next shift is in twelve hours,” Alpha said. “Get some rest.”

“I shall. I’ll probably read stuff from my world,” Aialah said as she entered the turbolift.

After Aialah had left, Alpha looked over the data Nina had provided on her encounters with Spider-Man so far.

Spider-Man
Enhanced strength, acrobatics, able to generate webs and cling to surfaces, seems to have a sense for danger.

Otto Octavius
Fused to a harness with artificially intelligent arms, but is otherwise a normal human.

“Not much there,” she murmured. She wandered over to the Engineering station. She checked the status of the ship. ‘Everything’s in order.’ She went back to the command chair and restarted her Klingon opera playlist.

“Klingon opera again?” the Pilot asked.

“It’s grown on me.”

The turbolift opened on Deck 3, where Aialah’s quarters were. ‘And Nina’s quarters are on a different deck!’ she thought again. She shook her head. That wasn’t what she wanted to think about. ‘I miss home, although it was dangerous to stay.’ She was thankful that Nina had brought her to the Baffin, really. As she walked to her quarters, she realised that she was quite tired. ‘Alpha had a point!’
The door opened and she went in and grabbed a PADD on the table. “Computer, access Alae-Lakria database, load a random short story about superheroes that was published within the last 20 years.”

“Affirmative.”

The story loaded and Aialah began reading it.

Back on the Bridge, Alpha went to one of the science stations.

“Something?” Eta asked.

“There are still a lot of questions about this Earth.”

“And some of the other Earths the Baffin’s been to?”

“Yes,” Alpha said as she brought up the data from Arendelle again. ‘I know there isn’t a match with this Earth.’ She then called up the information on the Alae-Lakria of Alaiah’s time.

“Alae-Lakria?” Eta asked.

“It’s a long shot,” Alpha admitted. “But I want to cover everything.”

“Sure.”

“Computer: Analyse any similarities between Alae-Lakria and Earth.”

“Affirmative. Analysis will take approximately one hour.”

‘That’s a while,’ Alpha thought. “Use shuttle computers to aid in analysis.”

“Affirmative. Time now approximately fifty minutes.”

“A little impatient?” Eta asked.

“Maybe.”

Back in New York, Nina returned to the TARDIS after searching for Spider-Man. ‘No clues,’ she thought. ‘I’ll sleep on it and see what I can figure out in the morning.’

Alpha had gone over some of the Alae-Lakrian history when the computer completed it’s analysis.

“No indication of magic on Alae-Lakria in the records. Many civilisations on both planets have many similarities.”

That wasn’t surprising.

“Comparison of Aialah’s home nation with the United States.”

“The political organisation of the Kingdoms of Nalara is much more structured than the United States of America.”

“Show the maps of the two side by side.”

The maps were then shown. Alpha saw that the Kingdoms of Nalara was only a third of the size of the United States, although it still dominated its continent.

“Maybe that’s not helpful, bring up the information on the Librarian Guild.”

“Affirmative.”

Excerpt from: Mirror Mirror – Jade Survives
Jade Coigley returned to the room that would in her time be Jo Tiegan’s room. ‘Or it will no longer be,’ she thought as she came up to the Mirror. She hesitated, despite the old man saying that she had to come back straight away. ‘I could look around and then go back.’

Excerpt from: Mysteries of Aurora
“It’s a big part of what I’m interested in, but not everything,” Freya said. “For instance…” she then told them about the mystery of the missing Renaissance artworks.

“That’s still about art,” Anise said.

“I guess so,” Freya responded with a giggle.

“It’s a bit strange,” Leia considered.

“That is one reason why I’m going to investigate,” Freya said.

Olivia stretched and looked at the time.

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn
“I agree there, and I think Anders is getting in over her head.”

“Most likely, and as far as her motivation goes, she wants to use her powers for good, to help people. Isn’t that enough?”

“I agree,” Quinn said.

“I’ll talk to Jamie about that, as well as the article,” Ted said.

“Thanks, Ted. I’ll go to Ms. Li now.”

Quinn entered the office to find the principal busy with paperwork.

“Ms. Morgendorffer?” she asked.

Quinn placed a copy of the Lowdown on her desk. “I’m sure you’re aware of the article quoting me saying something about Kevin Thompson.”

“I knew you would come here today, once I read the Lowdown.”

“I’d like you to allow Ted to print a retraction.”

“That is a massive step, Ms. Morgendorffer. Are you sure?” Li asked.

“Of course I’m sure.”

“Give me a reason why?”

“Because there are likely false rumors spreading and Daria and I might tell my mother that you’re allowing libelous articles to be published.”

The Principal looked annoyed. “Fine! I will allow Mr. Dewit-Clinton to print a retraction. As far as I know, the Lowdown has never printed a retraction before!”

“There’s a first time for everything,” Quinn said as she turned to leave.

Angela thought after Quinn left, and grabbed the Lowdown. She re-read the article. ‘I can see how that can be misinterpreted,’ she thought and switched on the PA system. “Ted Dewit-Clinton, please report to the Principal’s office.”

Daria heard the principal call Ted to her office as she got her food. ‘I guess Quinn managed to get her to print a retraction,’ she thought.

She approached the usual table to find Jane Lane and Sandi starring daggers at each other. ‘But what else is new,’ she thought. Harry wasn’t there yet and she saw that Tania Ashworth was sitting with her usual friends on the other side of the cafeteria.
27. Resolving Arendelle’s Crisis
Leonard considered Thor’s words. Despite their care, it seemed that their very presence had changed events in Arendelle. “But we haven’t really.”

“The butterfly effect,” Lena said.

“What she said, more or less,” Thor added.

“Of course,” Leonard said. Still, it was a stretch.

“So, what now?” Lena asked.

“We rescue Princess Anna,” Thor answered, as if that was obvious.

They approached the palace. “Heimdall says Anna is in a room somewhere,” Thor said.

“Can’t we just beam or bifrost her out of there?” Lena said.

“Elsa’s magic is throwing off interference,” Thor said. “Besides, the Bifrost works best outdoors. But we can break our way in,” he added as he hefted Mjolnir.

“Oh of course,” Lena said.

They approached the palace. It was obvious that what sources of heat there were, were inefficient in the face of the forces Elsa had unleashed. Lena took out her tricorder. “One weak lifesign in a room on this side,” she said.

“We don’t have much time,” Thor said.

“Let’s do this.” Lena said with determination.

Leonard sighed.

Princess Anna was getting colder by the second. The sting of Hans’ betrayal filled her, but her love for Elsa was stronger. ‘I have to get out of here!’ she thought. She tried the door again. It was still locked. Suddenly the opposite wall caved in and she looked and saw what looked like some sort of war hammer come to rest on the floor. ‘Wait? Is that Mjolnir?’ she thought.

Thor called Mjolnir back to him as he entered through the hole in the wall of the palace, followed by Lena and Leonard. Princess Anna looked a little shocked.

“Are you Thor?”

“Yes,” he answered. “And you’re Princess Anna. We have to find Queen Elsa immediately. We need to stop Prince Hans’ plans.”

Anna stumbled forwards and collapsed into Thor’s arms. “He’s taking over Arendelle!”

“That’s why we need to find Elsa,” Thor said.

“And see if her familial love can save you,” Lena added.

“It’ll be slow going,” Leonard said.

“Heimdall reports that she’s left her ice castle and is approaching the city,” Thor said. “We need to get to her before Hans does.”

Lena used her tricorder. “There’s still too much interference.”

“We need to get closer,” Thor said.

“Of course,” Leonard said.

Thor then twirled Mjolnir. “Hold on,” he said.

All three held onto him and they flew out of the room.

“I don’t suppose that you can do this without getting colder?” Lena asked, as she looked at Anna next to her.

“I’m afraid not,” Thor answered. “But we’ll land shortly,”

“Good, because, the wind is getting through my clothes,” Leonard said.

“I’m detecting something ahead,” Lena said as she held her tricorder tightly. “It’s probably Elsa.”

“You’re right,” Thor responded. “She’s approaching the city.”

They landed in the middle of the fjord. “She should be very close,” Thor said.

Lena looked and saw two people. One was Queen Elsa, but the other was Hans, who had her at sword point!

“No!” Thor called out as he released Mjolnir.

Mjolnir knocked the sword out of Hans’ hands before returning to Thor who was running up.

Hans looked shocked, while Elsa looked relieved.

“Your attempt at taking over Arendelle is over!” Thor said.

“Wrong! Thor, if it is even is Thor,” Hans said. “The Queen is a monster, and the princess is nearly dead! Their royal house is at an end.”

“She’s dying?” Elsa asked. “I don’t know how to fix it!”

“You have to try, not only for Anna’s sake, but for Arendelle’s, maybe the whole world,” Lena said.

“Grand Pabbie said something about love,” Anna said.

“What did you say?” Elsa asked.

“Grand Pabbie? Love?” Anna asked.

Elsa remembered being at the Trolls home the first time she had hurt Anna, just before she had withdrawn from her. ‘But I needed to be by myself,’ she thought. But she now saw that she had hurt Anna in another way, and made her desperate for connection, which made her incredibly vulnerable to Hans’ attention. ‘True love,’ she thought. ‘Familial love.’

“Elsa?” Anna asked.

“Love? Is it that simple?” Elsa asked herself. She thought for a moment and decided to try.

Lena watched as a wave of energy emanated from Elsa. First it was Anna, who no longer looked like she was on the edge of freezing to death. The ice grey in her hair gave way to the usual fiery ginger. Then the snow stopped and the ice in the fjord started to melt.

On Baffin, the Bridge had been quiet after Emerson had followed Frigga into the Observation Lounge.

“Something’s changing. Temperatures in Arendelle are now rising,” Janelle Browne, one of the junior science officers, reported.

“On screen,” Lieutenant Aria Greene said.

The screen showed the snow disappearing from Arendelle and the surrounding regions.

“Bridge to Commander Emerson,” Greene said.

“Report.”

“The anomalous winter is disappearing.”

“Try to contact the away teams,” Emerson said, as he turned from Frigga to the window.

“Aye, sir.”

Lena and Leonard watched as Elsa gave Olaf his own snowstorm to sustain him. Then the Baffin contacted them.

“Baffin to Andersen and Albert, some in.”

Lena discretely tapped her commbadge. “Andersen here, we’re returning shortly.”

“Understood, Greene out.

“We can easily Bifrost onto your ship. It would be better than revealing your teleportation technology,” Thor said.

Lena nodded. “OK.”

Thor raised Mjolnir, “Heimdall, Bifrost for three to Baffin now.”

Lena and Leonard stepped next to Thor.

“So…” Lena asked.

“In a moment. But say farewell to Elsa and Anna first.”

“Oh of course.”

“Thanks for the help,” Anna said. “Even if you didn’t do much.”

“You’re welcome,” Lena said.

“And I hope you find what you’re looking for.”

As they entered the Bifrost Leonard looked around. ‘This is colourful!’ he thought. However, it was only about ten seconds before they arrived in one of Baffin’s corridors.

“Deck 2, near the Mess Hall,” Lena commented.

“Deck 1 was too small,” Thor said.

“Of course,” Lena said. She tapped her commbadge. “Andersen to Emerson, Albert and I are back aboard.”

“Lu and Hernandez are beaming up now. Report to the Observation Lounge,” Emerson ordered.

“On our way!”

A first: The first fan art uploaded to DeviantArt - a deck plan of a small Starfleet scoutship from the early 25th Century. It took about a month, but that time was well spent.

“We need to find Peterson,” Quinn said.

“I’m sure she’ll find out soon enough. But there is something else we can do.”

“Which is?”

“We’ll go and try to talk to his parents again,” Helen answered. She turned to Marianne, who had turned from her desk. “Marianne, tell Eric that I had to duck out due to an emergency.”

“I will, Helen.”

“Come on, Quinn.”

“Right behind you,” Quinn said.

Daria, Jane and Jennifer left the Historia out the rear entrance. “So, what are we doing?” Jennifer asked.

“I’ll drop you two at Jane’s and then look for the fourth vigilante,” Daria answered.

“You don’t want us to know her secret identity too,” Jane concluded.

“Exactly, and you’re likely to be safe there,” Daria said.

“True,” Jane said.

“I’d likely to be just as safe at the Historia. I’d like to help,” Jennifer said. “Even if SpiderGirl conveniently roped me into this.”

Daria could see that Jennifer was struggling a little. “You can do it. You’re helping with the play after all,” she said as she turned on the engine.

“Thanks,” Jennifer said.

“And you can help Jane. She has gathering various maps of Lawndale. Maybe you two can try to figure out where William might go.”

“Good idea, Daria,” Jane said.

Jane thought about it as Daria drove towards Howard Drive. ‘It would be difficult for me to leave as the Shadow if Jennifer is there, but Daria would be suspicious if I refuse Jennifer’s help now. I’ll have to wait five minutes and get Trent to help Jennifer with my project.’

Despite society's insistence otherwise, the beliefs and opinions that we hold about things change over time. We thought it was important that we reflect that (and perhaps laugh at our previously ill-considered opinions) with this challenge.

Check out the comments for all the awesome participants of the challenge and visit their journals/challenge responses to comment on their posts and cheer them on.

Not many have changed over time. However, there is one I'll talk about.
When Star Trek: Discovery started. I thought it was quite good. However as time passed, especially from the second season onwards, I saw that it was a mess. The jump to the 32nd Century didn't really solve that issue, and probably contributed to the next note.
Michael Burnham. She is insufferable and preachy, and only become more so over time.

(But these issues didn't stop me being as completionist with Discovery as with other Trek series.

It's not good that Lower Decks ended after only five seasons.)

Excerpt from: Mysteries of Aurora
Freya looked at the directory in the Grand Atrium again. “Renaissance Art of Aurora, should be in the Renaissance Section.” She found that it was. “Of course.” But, was Alexia still in the Information Science Section?

She decided to see if Alexia was still there or not first.

She found that Alexia had left. ‘Not surprising, she had to go to lunch herself.’ She then headed to the Renaissance section.

The afternoon passed, Freya read about various Auroran artists from the Renaissance, many of whom she had known about, but she learned more about the context of their works. But she soon found some mysteries. Some of them had mysteriously stopped their work, and others works had been lost over time, even from the University’s art gallery.

“One problem with that,” Tuffnut said.

“But why would the dragons still be on board?” Astrid asked. “And why is it approaching Berk of all places? It doesn’t make sense.”

“Record of ship now,” Ruffnut said.

“What?” Fishlegs asked.

“It’s saying the same thing,” Astrid said with annoyance.

“Wait,” Ruffnut said. “Record when the ship left Atlantis.”

Excerpt from: Tales of Voyager
The Doctor had overheard the conversation. “Everything is more complex than we expect.”

“That’s the experience of every investigator,” Janeway said. “But we will get home.” She turned to Kes. “Try not to worry about the Krenim. I’m sure that the Borg will find them as resistant as the Federation.”

“I hope so,” Kes said.

“She is free to go, although I advise rest for a couple of days,” the Doctor said. “Let Ensign Wildman tend the airponics bay.”

“I’ll let her know,” the Captain said.

“I need to think more about the experience anyway,” Kes said.

Janeway and Kes left sickbay together a few minutes later. “I thank you, again, for getting us out of Borg space.”

“We’re now in the unknown,” Kes said. “The Caretaker may have been part of group of explorers and later scoured the Galaxy for a mate, but he didn’t teach us much about way lay beyond. That’s part of why I wanted to be on this journey.”

“You may have told me that before.”

“Yes. That is one reason why I wanted to stay on Voyager, Captain. I want to reach the Federation with you.”

“I can’t promise that we’ll make it in your lifetime,” Kathryn said.

“I know that too, but you’re all my friends, even those who I barely know.”

They reached the turbolift. “I have to get back to the Bridge. There’s a lot to do before we leave this planet.”

“Have you named it yet?” Kes asked.

“It has a catalogue number.”

“But that seems inadequate.”

“I know what you mean. I’ll consider it,” the Captain said.

Janeway returned to the Bridge to see that Chakotay was coordinating the repair efforts with his usual efficiency. “Report,” she said as she came to the command chair.

“B’Elanna says that the warp core is back online and the shield generators have been overhauled. We should be back in the sky by 1800,” Chakotay reported.

“That’s good news.”

“And there doesn’t seem to be any damage to the spaceframe.”

That was even better news.

The boat soon reached the creek and SpiderGirl easily turned the boat upstream, despite the reed beds. “We should be back in Lawndale in ten to fifteen minutes,” she said.

“That’s good,” Dafoanairi said. “Because I’m getting seasick.”

SpiderGirl took something out of her utility belt and handed it to Dafoanairi. “Here, some ginger,” she said.

“Um, thanks, but is it fresh?”

“Of course. I bought it yesterday.”

“OK.”

Dafoanairi ate the ginger cube. ‘I guess that if she’s carrying people, they sometimes get nauseous,’ she thought as she looked ahead. It would be while they would see much of Lawndale yet. She knew that SpiderGirl was familiar somehow. ‘I know who she isn’t,’ she thought as she looked at Jane and thought of the Enigma. ‘But whoever she is, I’ll protect her identity as I’m protecting the Enigma’s.’

SpiderGirl’s estimate was accurate. The boat arrived at Lawndale’s dock, a third of a mile upstream of the Jefferson Bridge, almost fifteen minutes after entering the creek. The storm was beginning to subside. SpiderGirl could see Agent Leung waiting. “OK, everyone out, we’re here.”

“Good,” Dafoanairi said. “I’ll be off.”

“Are you sure?” Ninja Talon said.

“I need to rest before something I have to do later today,” Dafoanairi said.

Ninja Talon indicated her understanding with a nod.

SpiderGirl and Ninja Talon lead Jane and the critics up from the dock to the waiting FBI agents.

“Here are the former abductees,” SpiderGirl said.

“Jane Lane,” Jane said. “We’ve all been through a lot.”

“We can go to the field office right away,” Leung said.

‘Why has this turned into a wild goose chase?’ she asked herself.

“I wished it to South Dubbo,” Mel said in a regretful tone.

“He’s lying! He hid it somewhere in this house. I’m going to search the attic for it,” Dennis said. He still didn’t believe what Mel was saying. ‘She is trying to trick me away from here,’ he thought.

“That seems rather extreme!” Anna Marie said.

Daniel and Katelyn were approaching Kathiannah. “Tuvok is hailing again,” Katelyn reported.

“Sure. This is Ensign Hawkins.”

“You disobeyed Captain Janeway's orders,” Tuvok stated. “And there is the fact that you modified an escape pod without permission.

“Yes, we admit that,” Katelyn said.

“But now we must plan how to re-take Kathiannah from the terrorists. As I am the ranking officer, I am in command.”

“No doubt about that,” Daniel said.

Tuvok raised an eyebrow, but didn't respond to his sarcasm. “I know you added phasers to the pod as well as the warp drive. We shall force the aft shields down. I can land in the shuttle bay while you dock.”

“We were planning on that,” Katelyn said.

“Ready?” Jane asked.

“Of course,” SpiderGirl said. “I’ll take you first.”

“No, take Kalina first,” Jane said. “Then we can proceed in order of abduction.”

“Why?” Ninja Talon asked.

Jane shrugged her shoulders.

“OK, Kalina!” SpiderGirl said. “Before Beck knows what we’re doing.”

“Right!” Kalina said. She walked over, grabbed onto the superheroine and closed her eyes. “Now!”

“Not so tight!” SpiderGirl said. “Here we go.”

SpiderGirl swung, and Kalina’s scream, along with the thunder, almost overwhelmed her.

She set her down on the roof. “Ow! My hearing is enhanced, you know!”

Kalina huddled on the roof, shivering in the rain, her eyes remaining closed. “Sorry, I didn’t know.”

“I’ll get Oliver.”

Ninja Talon looked out the window as she waited for SpiderGirl to come back. A flash of lightning and she saw Dafoanairi approaching. ‘That’s going to make things interesting,’ she thought. She still didn’t think she was Daria. She glanced at where Jane was guarding the door.

Dafoanairi saw SpiderGirl swing back into the room. She looked up at where the critic was huddling on the roof. ‘I have to get there,’ she decided. She looked at where the Enigma was still battling the traps. ‘Just as well these Doc Martins are waterproof,’ she thought, as she was wearing her usual boots, which were easy to hide with the cloak. She then realised that the rope had run out. ‘Just as well I have a spare.’

“Ok, Oliver,” SpiderGirl said.

“I’m coming, I won’t scream.”

He then held on and they swung up.

Kalina was afraid and soaked. She winced as another peal of thunder crashed in around her. She was afraid to open her eyes, to see the height she was at. She then heard SpiderGirl land with Oliver. “OK, I’ll get the other critic and Talon will come with Jane.”

“Be quick!” Kalina said. “I want out of this rain.”

“I’ll be as quick as I can,” SpiderGirl quipped, before she swung back down.

Oliver than tried to take one of her hands, but she swatted it away. “Leave me alone!”

The Enigma came up to the door and pushed it in telekinetically. “Quentin Beck! You, like, have made me mad!”
