Jane got to her homeroom in time. “A Little tardy Lane!” Miss Morris grouched.
“Just had to attend to some Mystery Club business,” Jane explained.
“That’s no excuse!”
“Not to you, no.”
“Jane Lane. Late!”
Jane grumbled. She knew Miss Morris had it in for her family. She was certain that was one reason why Penny had gone off grid. She handed Miss Morris one of the photocopies she was carrying.
“What’s this?”
“A Sketch of someone Daria thinks may be one of the people who broke into the coffee house,” Jane answered.
Miss Morris responded by screwing up the sketch. “Mystery Club! Sounds like Teens getting themselves in over their heads to me! Detention, this afternoon, Lane!”
Jane slumped to her desk.
Daria was almost late to her homeroom, again. Ms. Defoe marked her off with a slight smirk.
“Would you like one of the sketches?”
“Certainly.”
Daria sat and found herself approached by another student. One with her face partially hidden by her long blonde hair. “You’re looking for whoever broke into the Cybercafe?” she asked.
“Yes,” Daria answered. “And you are?”
“Jen. Jen Burns.”
“And you want to help me with this case?”
“Yes. I’ve also thought of joining the Mystery Club.”
“That would be good,” Daria considered. She gave Jen one of the sketches. “Have you seen that individual?”
Jen scrutinised the sketch. “I’m not sure. I’ll see if my friends have.”
Rumours spread through the school as the students went to class. Some were finding similarities in the sketches to some unpopular students, despite attempts by Daria, Jane, Quinn and Charles to stop them jumping to such conclusions.
However, one of those who actually did break in became aware that Daria was onto them. He had to warn the others!
Daria and Jane caught up between first and second period. Daria listened patiently to Jane’s diatribe about Miss Morris. “So, she won’t help us?” she added.
“Definitely not,” Jane concluded.
“But there is Ms. Defoe.”
“That’s true, but she’s supportive anyway.”
‘There’s a story there…’ Daria thought. But that would be followed up on later.
“I’m sorry, but our few minutes are up.”
