South America
In Brazil, reforms are instituted so that more power is concentrated in Brasilia. (What had been a trend is now made official.) There are protests in most major cities but they die down by the end of the year.


Europe
The last Druid dies (of old age) in northern Wales. Druidism had been slowly fading over the past century.

The Good Friday Agreement is signed in Northern Ireland, bringing an end to the Troubles. Northern Ireland gains independence from Southern England.

In France, the formerly popular television series Oceanautique (about the crew of a submarine in the mid 21st Century) comes to an end. Ratings had finally fallen to an abysmal level.

Disaster strikes in Ukraine, when there is a meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Fallout spreads across a wide area of Europe...[1]

Nigeria votes to become a republic, rather than a Commonwealth Realm.

South Africa becomes a republic after a referendum. They remain in the Commonwealth. (After Nigeria)

The Cypriot War continues.

Armenia and Azerbaijan invade Zangezur.


Oceania
Vanuatu gains independence from New Zealand following a referendum.


Space
Russia completes the Mir space station.
